A Historical Survey of the Totality of Events of the Great Hawaiian Revival from 1836-1842

This is a thorough and well-researched dissertation by Dr. Nick Freeman that provides an overview of the leading players and locations of what is known today as the “Great Hawaiian Revival” of the mid-1800’s.

How did Christianity spread in the Hawaiian Islands and who did God use to orchestrate this great movement? The most well-known single personage is Titus Coan, who pastored a church in Hilo, Hawaii, and under whose leadership the Great Hawaiian Revival culminated.

But what is less well-known are the other players:

  • Evangelists and pastors in different areas of Hawaii who experienced smaller revivals first and fanned the flames;
  • Members of the Hawaiian royalty who worked in concert with these evangelists, donating lands and other goods;
  • Influencers of the time period, such as Blind Bartimaeus and Governor Kuakini, among many others, whose actions were used by God to fill in gaps across the islands.
